Visiting the San Antonio Zoo is always an adventure, but now there’s something new to discover beyond the animals—art! Over the years, the zoo has been adding sculptures and creative works across its grounds, and this fall, families will be treated to several exciting new additions. From larger-than-life gorillas to interactive bronze tables, these pieces make the zoo even more magical for kids and adults alike.

A Bronze Gorilla Welcomes You In

Right at the entrance, guests will now be greeted by a towering “Bronze Gorilla” sculpture created by local artist Bob Guelich—the same artist who designed the zoo’s iconic “Lion Pride” statue. Thanks to the support of donors Estela Hollin-Avery and Tracy Avery, this striking gorilla welcomes visitors as a bold symbol of the zoo’s dedication to conservation.

Above the gorilla, families can spot “Butterflies in Flight”, a sparkling art piece celebrating nature and building excitement for the opening of Congo Falls, the zoo’s brand-new gorilla habitat opening later this year. A plaque nearby reminds visitors of the zoo’s mission: “May San Antonio Zoo be your entrance to the world of conservation.”

Art That Tells Conservation Stories

Zoo President & CEO Tim Morrow shared that adding art to the zoo is a way to tell conservation stories in fresh and engaging ways. Many of the new pieces do exactly that:

  • “Beno Thinking Big” – A peaceful bronze gorilla by international artists Gillie and Marc, reminding visitors that Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered. With every sculpture sold, the artists donate to the World Wildlife Fund.
  • “The Wild Table of Love” – An interactive dining table surrounded by endangered animals (and the artists’ playful characters, Rabbitwoman and Dogman). Guests can sit at the table and reflect on community, love, and protecting wildlife.
  • “Gorilla Topiary” – A leafy gorilla with a butterfly perched on its finger, created by River Oaks Plant House. It symbolizes the joy of discovery and will soon be part of Congo Falls.
  • “Gorilla” by Sherry Sander – A friendly reclining gorilla sculpture designed for kids to climb on. This piece will live inside Congo Falls and highlight the gentle side of these amazing animals.

A Zoo That’s More Than Animals

The San Antonio Zoo has always been known for amazing wildlife, but these new sculptures make it a destination for art lovers, too. Families can take photos, explore, and connect with the zoo’s message of caring for animals and the planet in new and inspiring ways.

From the majestic Bronze Gorilla to the interactive Wild Table of Love, these artworks are sure to become new family favorites. So next time you visit the San Antonio Zoo, don’t just look for the animals—look for the art that brings their conservation stories to life.
