The Arctic Fox

The Arctic fox is a snow-loving survivor with a fluffy coat, fuzzy paws, and a playful spirit. Built for freezing weather, it’s nature’s little winter explorer!

All About The Arctic Fox

The Arctic fox lives in some of the coldest places on the planet—the Arctic tundra of North America, Europe, and Asia. But don’t worry—this clever little fox is perfectly built for the chill! It has a thick, warm coat, a short nose and ears to keep heat in, and even fur on the bottom of its feet to walk across snow like built-in snow boots.

In the winter, the Arctic fox’s fur is snow white, helping it blend in with icy surroundings. But in summer, it sheds and turns brown or gray, so it can hide in rocks and tundra plants. This color-changing superpower is called seasonal camouflage!

These foxes are omnivores, meaning they eat a little of everything—mostly small animals like lemmings, birds, and fish, plus berries, eggs, and even leftovers from polar bear meals. They have an amazing sense of smell and can hear prey moving under the snow—then pounce with a big leap to catch it.

Arctic foxes are curious, playful, and quiet, often seen traveling alone or in pairs. They build dens in hillsides or snowdrifts and may return to the same den year after year. In zoos, Arctic foxes are usually featured in cold-climate or tundra exhibits, where their snow-loving nature and fluffy coats make them a hit with visitors.
