The American Bald Eagle

With a snowy white head, sharp yellow beak, and wings that stretch wide across the sky, the American bald eagle is both beautiful and bold! A national treasure and a wildlife success story!

All About The American Bald Eagle

The American bald eagle is not only the national bird of the United States, but it’s also one of the most awe-inspiring raptors in North America. With its sharp eyes, massive wingspan, and powerful talons, this bird of prey commands attention—whether it’s soaring above a river or perched proudly on a branch.

Bald eagles live near lakes, rivers, and coastal regions, where they can hunt for fish, their favorite food. Despite their name, bald eagles aren’t actually bald—the word “bald” once meant “white-headed.” Their bright white head and tail feathers stand out against a dark brown body, making them easy to identify.

These eagles have incredible eyesight, allowing them to spot fish swimming far below. They swoop down with their strong, hooked talons to snatch up their meal mid-flight. They’ll also eat birds, small mammals, and carrion (dead animals), depending on what’s available.

Bald eagles are known for forming lifelong pairs. Mated eagles build enormous nests—called eyries—in tall trees or on cliffs. These nests can grow to be over 6 feet wide and weigh hundreds of pounds, with parents returning year after year to add more branches.

Once endangered due to hunting, habitat loss, and pesticide use, bald eagles have made a huge comeback thanks to conservation laws and public education. Today, they are one of the greatest success stories in American wildlife conservation—and zoos play a big part in helping people learn how to protect them.
