Home / Latest News / Baby Animals / Meet Waffles, the San Antonio Zoo’s Newest Giraffe

Say hello to Waffles! The San Antonio Zoo recently welcomed this young Reticulated giraffe to its herd, marking an exciting milestone for conservation and education. Born at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center on March 4, 2023, Waffles brings curiosity, charm, and a distinctive hourglass marking on her neck that sets her apart.

This addition is part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), which supports genetically diverse populations of endangered species like giraffes. With several subspecies facing critical threats, including steep population declines, Waffles represents the zoo’s commitment to preserving these magnificent creatures for future generations.

Explore the Naylor Savanna

Visitors to the zoo can now see Waffles in the newly upgraded Naylor Savanna, a state-of-the-art giraffe habitat featuring expansive outdoor spaces and stunning indoor viewing areas with floor-to-ceiling windows. This innovative design provides an incredible opportunity to observe Waffles as she acclimates to her new surroundings.

“Waffles is a wonderful addition to our herd and a step forward in our efforts to support conservation breeding programs,” shared Tim Morrow, CEO of the San Antonio Zoo. “She’s an ambassador for her species and a reminder of how vital it is to protect wildlife.”

To celebrate Waffles’ arrival, Longnecks Bar & Grill is serving up exclusive waffle flights until December 31. Pair your visit with this family-friendly treat and enjoy panoramic views of the Naylor Savanna.
