If you’ve spent any time in Texas, chances are you’ve seen an armadillo! These fascinating little animals are known for their tough, armor-like shells that help protect them from predators. They’re shy, nocturnal creatures — which means they’re most active at night.

The most common kind in Texas is the nine-banded armadillo. It doesn’t actually have nine bands of armor (sometimes more, sometimes less), but that’s the name it goes by! These animals love to dig — for food and for hiding places — using their strong claws to burrow underground.

Fun Armadillo Facts for Kids:

  • Armadillos can hold their breath for up to 6 minutes while digging!
  • They eat insects, grubs, and worms — yum!
  • Some armadillos can jump straight up in the air when surprised.
  • Their name means “little armored one” in Spanish.

Now it’s your turn to get creative! Download our free armadillo coloring page and have fun decorating this unique Texas native.
