Texas Horned Lizard Conservation at Caldwell Zoo

Meet the Texas Horned Lizard, a threatened species with spiky skin and an iconic reptilian appearance. Also known as “Horny Toads,” these lizards are beloved members of the American Southwest’s vibrant wildlife population – but their numbers have decreased due to habitat loss. To protect them from further decline, the Caldwell Zoo teamed up with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for an ambitious breeding program that will help restore their native populations. Their state-of-the-art center provides all essentials needed for healthy horned lizards including proper nutrition, peace & quiet in surroundings closely resembling what they’d experience out in nature!
