Big news from the heart of Texas: the San Antonio Zoo has welcomed Kicheko, a giraffe with Texas roots and a conservation mission. Born in April 2024 at the Dallas Zoo, Kicheko’s name—Swahili for “laughter”—is already proving prophetic as he charms visitors and staff alike in his new home.

Kicheko joins resident giraffes Waffles and Brayden in the Naylor Savanna, a spacious habitat where guests can experience African wildlife up close. His transfer is part of the AZA’s Species Survival Plan®, ensuring that future generations will get to enjoy and protect giraffes for years to come.

The addition of Kicheko also marks the beginning of San Antonio Zoo’s new giraffe breeding program—an important step in safeguarding one of the world’s most iconic species.

For an unforgettable experience, guests can book the Giraffe Feeding Experience or take a Conserfari Tour, which lets you ride through the savanna and hand-feed giraffes from the back of a truck. Looking for a Texas adventure like no other? Stay overnight at Spekboom Lodge, where you’ll sleep just steps away from these towering animals.
